Can You Paint a Garage Door?

Garage doors play a fundamental role in every property. Whether it’s your home or business, a quality garage door offers security, insulation and even an aesthetic boost to a building.

Even the best garage doors can suffer wear and tear over time, and you may be considering giving yours a fresh lick of paint to restore it to its former glory.

But before you grab your nearest paintbrush and pot of paint, there are a number of factors you should be aware of.

In this month’s blog, the team at SAA Industrial & Garage Door Specialists will take a look at whether you can paint a garage door, and explore the best ways to do so.

Can you paint a garage door?

In short, yes any garage door can be painted. However, it’s most common for wooden doors to be painted as the performance on this type of door is known to decrease over the years. In contrast, paint on metal doors, such as aluminium or steel, offers far greater longevity and usually the coat that comes with the product is enough to last.

However, there may be a few instances in which a new coat of paint might be appropriate.

These include:

  • Your garage door is rusting, peeling or chalking
  • The rest of the property has been repainted and you need it to match
  • You need additional weather protection
  • You simply want to give your property a fresh, new look

Best paint for a metal door

It’s important to select the correct type of garage door paint before you begin the painting process. As they spend all of their time outdoors, your garage door is exposed to all of the elements the British weather can throw its way.

With this in mind, a paint option such as Dulux’s Weathershield paint is a great choice to ensure your door can withstand all kinds of weather conditions.

Tips for painting a garage door

Now you know you can paint a metal garage door, it’s time to actually carry out the work. Before you begin, there are a few best practices you should follow.

First and foremost, it’s important to do the painting on a dry, mild day. After the paint has been completed it will need time to properly dry, which is why it’s not suitable to do the painting if it’s raining. Between 8°C and 25°C is believed to be the optimal temperature for garage door painting.

The best way to ensure your garage door gets a pristine finish is to guarantee that every nook and cranny is painted. In order to achieve this, you should avoid using paint rollers and instead use paint brushes. Bristles on brushes are far better at spreading the paint to every area of a garage door.

We’d also recommend painting from top to bottom, as it means any drops of paint can be covered evenly across the door.

There are also a number of items you can use to make the painting process easier and safer. These include:

  • Dust sheets, or old bed sheets, to catch paint splatters
  • A step ladder (if you can’t reach the top of the door)
  • A face mask and goggles
  • A sponge
  • A flat scraper
  • A piece of sandpaper
